The Dorset Bee

Helen, Sarah, Nicole, Gareth and Alison - We are based just outside Bridport, in lovely rural West Dorset, an area of outstanding natural beauty right on the Jurassic coast.  If you choose one of our residential courses we offer all inclusive guest accommodation.

We have combined our skills and passions of teaching, beekeeping, re-wilding, and cooking to provide a magical hosting experience for all of our guests. Our beekeeping team of Nicole, Gareth and Alison have a wealth of Beekeeping experience to share with you too.

We are 2021 national award winners for our Honey and Wax Wraps and we like to think our kind and natural approach to beekeeping makes us award winners with our bees as well!

We never stop learning, taking further courses and making indepth studies while contributing to research projects in a bid to better understand and spread the word as to how we can all help improve the habitat for pollinators and bio diversity in general. Once you understand a little about bees you begin to understand what else we can be doing to help the conservation of our fragile and depleted ecosystems.

All our courses and workshops offer a strong practical element, as we believe you need to 'do it' to fully understand what you're doing! We are there by your side to advise and assist, and all of our students leave our courses and bee experiences 'buzzing!'

All the bee experiences, whether it's one of our 3 hour taster sessions, a 2 day intensive beginners residential or our 5 day Duke of Edinburgh course you’ll get chance to handle the bees while learning all about the beekeeping year. We advise on equipment and explain techniques to keep Bees in a natural way that supports their roles as pollinators as well as honey producers.

Alongside the courses we also run workshops in wax wraps making, where you'll spend a few hours learning how to make them, and enjoy a lovely lunch with us.

We are an approved activity provider for the Duke of Edinburgh Award and offer 5 day courses for 16 to 25 year olds. We also run a lovely 2 day intensive residential for adults who are keen to start beekeeping and who want to fast track their learning. Our half day beekeeping taster sessions are also very popular gifts, as are our wax wrap making workshops.

Primary School Beekeeping program

As we are so passionate about education, especially children and young people that we are currently taking 12 children through the BBKA syllabus to achieve their junior certificate in Beekeeping. The children are aged from 8 to 11 years old and learning all about bees on our practical course which is having a very profound affect on them and us. We can offer our course to schools on a national basis, complete with training, lesson plans, and set up help.

Please get in touch if you would like your school to be involved with this exciting new project.
